Emily Not Afraid

Hello, my name is Emily Not Afraid. My apsáalooke name is Baasshússhe dée Isítcheesh, which translates to ‘Likes to go to Tobacco Dances.’ I am enrolled Crow, with Blackfeet, Oglala, and Chickahominy ancestry. I am a multimedia artist from the Crow reservation, currently furthering my education at Montana State University Billings. I come from a rodeo and powwow family, these two cultures heavily influencing my work. Growing up I watched my Mother and aunts bead for our family. They taught me the importance of having the ability to create traditional regalia for myself, so that I may continue to participate in community events. I started by sewing and beading for myself, then it turned into making for others after much interest. My beadwork is influenced by apsáalooke designs, and my illustrations most often depict scenes or memories from living as a native woman. I love creating, being able to dream an idea and bring it to fruition. Influenced and motivated by those that came before me, I hope to keep evolving as an Apsáalooke Bía artist.
